Campagna Romana (2020)
for double bass

Commissioned by the IU Double Bass Club

Duration: ca. 6'

First performed: March 12th, 2020 at IU

Program Note

This work takes inspiration from the landscape painting of the same name by Arnold Böcklin. The pastoral setting of a countryside in Rome is depicted with slow, gentle fourths at the beginning of the work, but as the music progresses, the low register of the double bass asserts itself to evoke the overwhelming darkness that swallows up the middle of the painting.
