Program Note
finding a line’s title reflects the journey the soloist takes as they navigate the melodic fragments throughout the work, many of which are abandoned or end inconclusively. It is also a reflection of my compositional journey as I wrote this music. Searching for an effective way to create a coherent narrative for an instrument with such an extensive repertoire behind it was a challenge; the beginning of the work in particular went through an extensive rewriting process. Most of the music deals with two contrasting textures— one lyrical and expressive, the other more rhythmically strict and dominated by harmonics. In the last section of the work, a long, ecstatic melodic line spanning the entire range of the instrument is finally attained.
