the acceleration of days (2022)
Written for the Hausmann Quartet
Instrumentation: string quartet
Duration: ca. 7'
First performed: August 5th, 2022 by the Hausmann Quartet at St. Peter's Episcopal Church (Del Mar, CA)
Program Note
The title of the work is taken from Jenny Offill’s 2020 novel
Weather. Published just before widespread pandemic-related lockdowns went into effect, its main character inhabits a tense, anxious energy as she grapples with living on different scales of experience at once—straining under the simultaneous weight of the minutiae of daily life, the uneasy awareness of America’s turbulent political atmosphere, and the global crisis of climate change.
“My #1 fear is the acceleration of days. No such thing supposedly, but I swear I can feel it.”
